One of the most famous guitars in rock history — Jerry Garcia’s “Tiger” guitar — made headlines in 2026 after selling for $11.56 million at auction, becoming one of the most expensive guitars ever sold.
The historic sale took place at Christie's in New York as part of the The Jim Irsay Collection, a world-famous collection of historic music memorabilia.
For Deadheads, Tiger is more than a guitar — it’s a symbol of the golden era of Grateful Dead live performances.
The Story of the “Tiger” Guitar
Tiger was custom built in 1979 by luthier Doug Irwin, who also created Garcia’s earlier guitar, Wolf.
Garcia famously told Irwin to build the instrument however he wanted — sparing no expense. The result was a masterpiece featuring exotic woods, brass hardware, custom electronics, and the iconic tiger inlay on the body.
Garcia used Tiger as his main stage guitar from 1979 to 1989, a period when the Grateful Dead were performing some of their most legendary concerts.
A Record-Breaking Auction
When Tiger went up for auction, experts estimated it would sell for around $1–2 million. Instead, intense bidding drove the final price to $11.56 million, far exceeding expectations.
The guitar had previously been owned by collector Jim Irsay, who purchased it in 2002 for $957,500.
